10 Things You Didn’t Know About George Washington

1. He Based His Political Life On A Roman Legend

Cinn As was typical of the era, Washington had great admiration for the classical societies of the ancient world; Rome, Athens, Sparta. He was particularly fond of the Roman story of Cincinnatus; a man who may or may not have existed. Cincinnatus was a Roman farmer who rose to the post of Dictator to defend the Republic, and then returned to his farm. Washington somewhat emulated this by returning to Mount Vernon following his second term as President. The admiration for Cincinnatus was so profound that Washington has become remembered as 'The American Cincinnatus.'

Conclusion

Hopefully you will now know something you didn't about Washington; be it his attitude towards Religion, politics, slavery or his teeth. The Cult of Personality which seems to have dominated his legacy has created a man who does not stand up to the modern standards by which we judge our leaders, yet the deconstruction of this mythology allows us to see him as a human being, capable of the same flaws as any other human.
