George Washington Resigns Edited 1 This was a marked break from traditional politics of the time; even following the French Revolution, politics tended to maintain in the hands of the richer and more educated classes. Washington did no allow for a horse drawn carriage or the expenditure of vast sums to celebrate his taking office. This sense of fiscal responsibility and dedication to the democratic ideals for which he had lost men in the Revolutionary War are the parts of him best remembered in public memory. The pageantry of the British for which he held such disdain illustrate the sense of loyalty that he seemed to have had, in comparison to the opportunistic power grabbing politicians we see all too often nowadays.
