Being socially inept can cover a number of things. These include: talking about past flings in front of you, playing on his phone in front of her family, arguing with her girlfriends, making sexist comments with his mates, not offering to pay for things, and generally just acting as a bit of an embarrassment in front of her. Sure, so we're not all perfect: and no doubt she sometimes does or says things that make him feel a little humiliated. But mistakes can be forgiven, whereas intentionally being rude to someone she knows or ignoring her at a family gathering are just downright mean. It's a matter of being conscious of your actions and being able to imagine how you make her feel and look in front of others.
