10 Things That Have Been Completely Ruined In 2015
5. Social Media
Imagine if, when you were a kid, someone told you that one day you'd be able to talk to all of your friends, any time of day or night, from anywhere you wanted. You could do it from bed or under a pile of puppies or on top of a mountain of chocolate. You could talk about whatever you wanted and while you were doing it you could see photos of them or videos of cats or even, if you wanted to be a nerd about it, you could discuss the news or whatever. Paradise, right? Now, maybe you're reading this and you are only a kid and so don't remember a time before Facebook and Twitter and Instagram (in which case, get back to your homework, whippersnapper). But most of us know what it was like before they came along and how exciting it was when they did. We remember the joy of Tweeting nothing to no one or casually adding our relationship status to Facebook figuring that could never possibly backfire. What a short-lived utopia that was. 2015 has been characterised more by people getting off social media than on. Quite apart from Twitter falling apart over the star vs heart question and the Reddit CEO leaving the company after dealing with near constant sexism, we've had an anti-Instagram campaign launched by...an Instagram celebrity. Social media will stick around but its glory days are over, replaced by constant photo tags from your Aunt Jen who just learnt how to use a scanner.
