10 Things You Won’t Believe Were Sold On eBay

2. Virgin Mary On Toast

If you've ever ordered a panini from Starbucks then you too will know the pain of spending an hour's worth of wages on a bit of toasted bread. What if it was 10 years old and said to bear the image of the Virgin Mary, though? Would you consider paying, perhaps, 28 THOUSAND dollars? Diane Duyser, from Florida made a grilled cheese sandwich one day, and took a bite from it. Nothing to mess your pants over, of course. We've all made a sandwich, you say. But has the Virgin Mary Mother of God herself ever been in there? Duyser, 52, spotted the face, scared at first, but believes the sandwich brought her good luck and is truly convinced of its divinity. When she sold it a decade later, little did she realise how much bread she could buy from the takings. With over 1.7 million hits on the sandwich, GoldenPalace.com, an online casino, were the corporation of maniacs that hammered the winning bid: the company executives saying they were willing to spend "as much as it took" to own the toasty shrine. It was, they said, part of pop culture and instantly recognizable. The most hilarious part of the whole auction is picturing the momentous scene at the 'sandwich handover', as Kerr and Steve Baker, CEO of GoldenPalace's management company, Cyberworld Group, flew all the way to south Florida to collect the bit of bread from Duyser. They then took the sandwich on a world tour before selling it and donating the money to charity. Diane said she never did anything to preserve the cheese toasty apart from keeping it in a plastic box, but it doesn't rot, crumble or fall apart. She did, however, caution potential buyers that the sandwich was "not intended for consumption".
