Intellectual properties (IPs) are extremely important to Universal Studios as big name franchises draw in fans who want to experience their favourite films in person.

At the very beginning Universal understood the power of the familiar horror icons to draw in the crowds. Fright Nights was fronted by Universal classic monsters including Dracula and Frankenstein's monster, with also an appearance from Beetlejuice.

The second year of the event was the premiere of a maze based in upon a movie. Wes Craven's The People Under the Stairs made its debut and was so popular it made a return the following year.

Some intellectual properties are more elusive than others. When WhatCulture spoke to the Creative Director of Halloween Horror Nights Michael Aiello he described one of Wes Craven's other popular movies "Scream" as a bit of a white whale. Hopefully that will be a franchise we will be seeing soon at Halloween Horror Nights.
