10 Things You Didn't Know About Disney's The Haunted Mansion
7. Ashes To Ashes
One deadly serious problem at Disney parks is that a lot of people want to have their ashes scattered there after cremation. Why wouldn't you? It is the Happiest Place on Earth after all. Somewhat fittingly, given the theme of the ride, one of the most popular destinations for this is the Haunted Mansion (presumably so when you come back as a ghost, you'll have plenty of friends who can show you the ropes). Understandably, from Disney's point-of-view, this isn't actually permitted, because, well, it's kinda gross for the other people on the ride. However, that doesn't exactly deter people, and there have been a number of incidents over the years of people scattering ashes throughout the Mansion (Pirates of the Caribbean and It's a Small World are other popular locations for this). Cast members now keep an eye out for this for this on surveillance cameras, which can lead to the ride closing down for a period of time. They'll simply hoover the remains up, which is a far less ceremonial send-off than the person probably had in mind.
NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far.
A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
