10 Things You Didn't Know About Disney's The Haunted Mansion
5. Pepper's Ghost
Pepper's Ghost is a popular form of illusion used across a variety of entertainment venues, such as amusement parks, museums, and concerts. The basic concept involves using different rooms or stages, mirrors, and lighting, all to create the illusion of objects appearing or disappearing. It was popularised in the girl-to-gorilla carnival slideshow, and the idea behind it was the basis for the 'hologram' of Tupac appearing on stage at Coachella back in 2012. The largest example of the technique found anywhere in the world, though, is at Haunted Mansion (and Phantom Manor). Here it is used to create one of the most iconic scenes of the ride, the ballroom dancing sequence, in which ghosts appear dancing. In this case, there are actual animatronic ghosts hidden out of sight, and it is their reflections used to create the illusion of ghosts in the ballroom.
NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far.
A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
