4. History Is... Flexible

As mentioned above, the true purpose of the London Dungeon is to act as an interactive, rather morbid history lesson. All the grimmest parts of London's history can be found inside: the Plague, the Great Fire of London, Jack the Ripper, Sweeney Todd. See anything wrong with that list? How about the fact Sweeney Todd never actually existed but was the creation of James Malcolm Rymer and Thomas Peckett Prest for a Victorian penny dreadful called The String of Pearls? Despite this, there was a Sweeney section within the Dungeon at Tooley Street which included signage detailing his date of birth and life story. The date of birth and life story of a fictional man, presented as fact. You won't find Mrs Lovett's pie shop at the new Dungeon at County Hall - could it be someone pointed out that it had no place in an historical attraction?
