10 True Crime Documentaries That Got Cases Reopened
6. Death In Ice Valley
Death In Ice Valley is a podcast authored by Marit Higraff, a Norwegian investigative journalist, which was published by NRK and BBC Worldwide in 2018. It covers the mysterious case of a badly burned female body discovered in 1970 by a group of hikers in Norway’s Isdalen Valley. Due to the nature of the burns, the woman could not be identified and was simply referred to as the ‘Isdal Woman.’
Her death was extremely suspicious and shrouded in mystery given that, shortly after the discovery, two unclaimed suitcases were picked up by police from a nearby train station, containing wigs, money in various different currencies and glasses with fingerprints that matched those on the body. It was also noteworthy that the tags had been cut from the Isdal Woman’s clothing, presumably to make identification more difficult.
There’s no doubt that she was murdered, but who by, and how did she end up in such an awful situation? This is what Death In Ice Valley set out to discover, firstly by identifying the Isdal Woman. Higraff discovered that a dentist had saved the woman’s jaw which was distinctive enough for investigators to agree to reopen the case. Sadly however, to this day, the Isdal Woman’s identity remains a mystery.
