10 True Crime Documentaries That Got Cases Reopened
7. Accused
Accused is a podcast series which aired its first episode in 2016. Season One covered the death of Elizabeth Andes whose boyfriend, Bob Young, discovered her having been stabbed to death in 1978 at her home in Ohio. Young was arrested immediately and after around 15 hours of interrogation and a polygraph failure, he gave a false confession.
Young was ultimately acquitted when his case went to trial, as his lawyer was able to point out inconsistencies between his statement and the facts of the case. However, although both legal and civil courts found Young not guilty, authorities were still convinced that they had the right man and refused to continue their investigation.
Thankfully a reporter for the Cincinnati Enquirer, Amber Hunt, caught wind of this case and decided to produce an investigative podcast covering the events of Andes’ murder and the trial of Bob Young. Her podcast found that to this day, the only evidence the police had against Young was his forced confession.
With Young’s permission, Hunt has convinced police to reopen the investigation and, although no new suspects have yet been considered, Hunt continues to send tips and new evidence to the police regularly, in hopes that one day some closure can be reached.
