10 True Crime Documentaries That Got Cases Reopened
3. Minds Of Madness
Minds of Madness is a podcast that was started by Bek and Tyler Allen in 2017. One of the podcast's most popular stories covered the mysterious death of a 19-year-old man named Tanner Barton, who seemingly died in his sleep whilst staying overnight at a friend’s house.
When Barton’s body was originally examined, police found no signs of trauma or hints of foul play. A toxicology report showed a small amount of cannabis in his system, but nothing that could be considered out-of-the-ordinary or lethal. They ended up ruling that his death had been caused by asphyxia, brought on by his obesity and the position that he was sleeping in.
Barton’s mother, Michele, refused to believe this was the case and was sure that something else must have happened. She got in contact with the Allens, who took up her case on their podcast, investigating the mysterious death over a four-month period. The podcast brought the story into the public eye and forced police to rereview the case. New witnesses were interviewed, and data was taken from Barton’s phone.
Texts revealed that Barton has been using Adderall and hadn’t slept for over 30 hours, however the case was officially closed in 2018, with the cause of death remaining the same. This is still disputed by Michele, who continues to investigate her son’s tragic death.
