10 True Crime Documentaries That Got Cases Reopened
4. The Jinx: The Life And Deaths Of Robert Durst
Arguably the most impactful documentary on this list, The Jinx was released in 2015 and covered a wealthy real-estate heir named Robert Durst and the deaths of three women closely connected to him; Kathleen McCormack Durst, who was his first wife, Susan Berman and Morris Black. Durst had used the documentary as a platform to deny the murders.
However, Durst made a fatal error when he excused himself to go to the bathroom, not knowing that his microphone was still on. The microphone picked up Durst talking to himself and essentially confessing to the murder. The transcript of the recording is as follows:
"There it is. You're caught! .... You're right, of course. But you can't imagine. ... Arrest him ... I don't know what's in the house ... Oh, I want this ... What a disaster ... He was right. I was wrong. And the burping ... I'm having difficulty with the question ... What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course."
Durst was arrested two months after the documentary was released and was convicted of the murders following his trial in 2020.
In 2021, Durst contracted COVID and he died at the age of 78 on 10 January 2022 whilst in custody.
