1. The Tamam Shud Case

One of Australia's greatest ever mysteries, the Tamam Shud Case refers to the mysteries surrounding an unidentified man discovered dead in 1948 on Somerton Beach, Adelaide. As well as the identity of the 'Somerton Man', there are a number of oddities pertaining to the case, including what appeared to be a secret code hidden in his pocket and the contemporary setting of the Cold War. In what many believe to be the key to the Somerton Man's identity, a tiny piece of paper inside a hidden pocket sewn into the man's trousers contained the words "Tamam Shud". The words were translated to mean "finished", and the paper was ripped directly from the final page of a rare copy of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam collection of poems. The copy of the book that the paper was ripped from was found to contain scribbled, handwritten markings, presumed to be a secret code. The code has never been cracked. Taman Shud Note There have been multiple theories as to the real identity of the Somerton Man, with some believing him to have been a Soviet spy. There have since been multiple unconfirmed claims from people believing that the Somerton Man is a long lost relative, and the investigation is still ongoing almost 70 years later.
