10 Unfinished Stephen King Novels (That He Should Definitely Finish)
9. The Aftermath
It seems as if The Aftermath would fit right in with today's television landscape, full of post-apocalyptic shows like The Walking Dead, The Leftovers, and Chris Carter's short-lived The After.
The Aftermath was written at the same time, roughly, as the book that would become Rage (published first under the Richard Bachman name), originally titled Getting It On. 50,000 words or so of The Aftermath exist, stored (like Sword in the Darkness) among Stephen King's papers in the special collections of the Raymond H. Fogler Library at the University of Maine.
The book describes life after a nuclear war that erupts during the Cuban Missile Crisis in the 1960s. And while that may seem a little dated today, the crisis is still a huge part of American history. The amount of time that has passed and the fading of the event into history is no doubt part of the reason why King never finished the work, but the success of 11/22/63 (King's time travel novel about the JFK assassination) proves that there is a market for historical works like this.
