On a solo trip to Los Angeles in February 2013, Canadian student Elisa Lam went missing during her stay at the Cecil Hotel. After an exhaustive search, the police released a video containing the last known sighting of Lam on the day she went missing.

The two-and-a-half minute clip shows Lam using a lift and behaving very strangely throughout. The footage quickly went viral on Youtube, with several prominent creators making videos about her disappearance. Then, on 19 February, an unwitting maintenance worker up on the hotel roof discovered Elisa's body in one of the hotel's 1,000 gallon water tanks.

It was then reported that she was found inside the water tank and that the cover of the water tank was on when found by the maintenance worker. This meant that somebody, or something else, had to have put her in there and close the tank as it was unable to be closed from the inside.

The elevator video after this news spread even further on the internet, with many online sleuths combing through all of Elisa's social media posts looking for signs of foul play. During the official inquest however, it turned out to be somewhat of an error in translation.

The whole detail suggesting foul play was the cover of the water tank being on, but it was confirmed by the maintenance worker that he had indeed found Elisa in the tank with the cover off, meaning that Elisa 's death was a tragic suicide.
