On 22 November 1963, US President John F. Kennedy was assassinated whilst travelling in a presidential motorcade through Dallas, Texas. In the inquest surrounding his death and subsequent investigations, a strange anomaly was noted by investigators.

This anomaly was that on what was a bright sunny day, there was a man holding up an umbrella who was one of the closest witnesses to the assassination. Later dubbed the Umbrella Man, he can be seen in the famous Zapruder film of the assassination as well as many photographs of the day.

The many theories behind the Umbrella Man included that he was in fact signalling the gunman to take the shot, or that the umbrella itself was in fact a gun that fired a paralysing agent at the president, meaning he would not be able to move and be the perfect still target.

The truth eventually came out several years later, as Louie Steven Witt came forward claiming to have no idea that he had stirred up such controversy. He stated that the use of the umbrella was a simple protest or heckle to the President for his father Joseph Kennedy's association with controversial British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain.
