10 Utterly Fascinating Cults

1. The Remnant Fellowship

Looking to lose a few pounds but stress eat because you're too concerned with the state of your immortal soul? Then The Remnant Fellowship may be what you're looking for, fatty. Concocted in 1999 by dietitian Gwen Shamblin, the Remnant Fellowship combines a diet programme with Christian teachings.

The fellowship grew out of Shamblin's “Weigh Down” workshop which taught that prayer could help prevent overeating. As the fellowship developed it began to take a more hardline approach, teaching not only that being fat is a sin, but all other churches were “counterfeit” or rather church-lite.

Members engage in 40-day fasts and Shamblin has referred to other churches as “the prostitute church”. Remnant Fellowship leadership teaches that “to the pure all things are pure”, so members are free to smoke and drink all they like as long as they keep the snacking to a minimum.
