10 Utterly Fascinating Cults
7. The Movement For The Restoration Of The Ten Commandments Of God
Obviously snappy titles are not a pillar by which this religion stands. The movement was devised in the late 1980s by former politician Joseph Kibweteere and professional banana beer brewer Credonia Mwerinde. They believed in a strict interpretation of the 10 commandments, going so far as to live primarily in silence so as not to accidentally bear false witness. They also forbade their followers from having sex and using soap, which probably helped with the no sex rule.
These rules were passed to Mwerinde directly from the Virgin Mary who would communicate through everyday objects using a hidden telephone system, hopefully at least once using a banana: banana phone.
The movement preached that the world would end on 1 January 2000; when it didn't, they postponed the date to 17 March. The organisation came to a tragic end during a party in the church's compound to commemorate the end of days, when an intense fire killed over 700 members.
Later investigations revealed that some of the members were murdered beforehand and that the Church's leaders, who are believed to have set the fire, may still be alive and in hiding.
