Kim Jong-un is the third and current leader of the People's Republic of North Korea, having succeeded his father in the position after his death in 2011. Since taking over the role of Leader, Kim has consolidated his power by executing anyone who might favor dissent to his rule. This included several relatives formerly close to his father and his own half-brother, whom he had assassinated in Malaysia in 2017.

Like his father, he has been accused of horrific crimes against humanity, which include the imprisonment of thousands of his people. The policies of the country, which include both staunch nationalism and severe isolationism have led to food shortages and widespread starvation.

Policies enacted by his predecessors include the "Three Generation Punishment," which forces imprisonment upon three generations when a crime is committed against the State. This has included not wiping dust off a portrait of the Great Leader. The guilty person, their children and their children's children are then imprisoned for life.

Additionally, there is only State-controlled media and foreign broadcasts are absolutely forbidden. People are not free to move within their own country, religion is mostly outlawed as are interracial relationships, and the military rules with an iron fist.
