What’s Really Going On: Liars
Hate to break it to you, but people lie.
Whether it’s the publicity, the money or simply boredom that makes them tell porkies, there are countless examples of supernatural hoaxes every year. Take, for example, the dramatic exposure of TV psychic, Peter Popoff (who was caught receiving information via an ear piece), or the Enfield haunting and that famous photograph of a young girl being thrown across the room by unseen hands (which, when put with the rest of the sequence of photos, looks for all the world like a girl jumping off her bed).
The incredible “personal accounts” of witnesses to supernatural phenomena can either come from those who got taken in by the trickery of others, and they are not to be derided, or they can come straight from the charlatans themselves in order to perpetuate the myth.
Science is not “out to get” mystics – in fact, if we could prove beyond reasonable doubt that the afterlife exists and humans could actually survive their own death, it would be one of the most exciting discoveries in the history of humanity. Unfortunately, the evidence just isn’t there.
Out of every haunting, psychic, faith healing, alien abduction or any other supernatural phenomenon, none of them has ever been proven to be true to a satisfactory scientific level. Of course, it is nigh on impossible (much like the proverbial teapot orbiting Mars) to disprove the existence of something. Far from this being a handy loophole, however, it just means that the burden of proof falls on those who make the claims.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence after all.
