11 Great Musicals With Mature Themes

2. The Rocky Horror Picture Show

The ultimate cult classic, inspiring the midnight screening session later adopted by films such as The Room and The Big Lebowski, with shows such as Glee, The Simpsons & The Drew Carey Show all dressing up their characters as Dr Frank-N-Furter at some point. A parody of the many low budget science fiction films that became popular in the mid-20th Century, this film quickly becomes so convincing in its mimicry that the satire has gone over many audience members heads, leading to its cult classic status. When young couple Brad and Janet decide to visit their old college professor to announce their engagement, a broken down car forces them to take refuge in the house of the mysterious Dr Frank-N-Furter. They are quickly dragged into a world of absurdity and horrors, as the self-proclaimed €œSweet Transvestite€ presents his invention to a shocked audience €“ a muscle-bound, blonde man named Rocky, who was specifically designed to satisfy his carnal desires. This proves to be merely the beginning though, as adultery and deceit runs rampant throughout the rest of the story, with Dr Frank-N-Furter seducing the majority of the cast by the time the credits roll. The incredible amounts of cross dressing, infidelity and an instance of axe murder still prove to be too much for certain audiences, with the soundtrack often finding itself in the centre of controversies. When Glee did their Rocky Horror episode several of the lyrics had to be changed for censorship reasons, which raises the question of why a family oriented show would choose to perform a musical with songs such as Sweet Transvestite, I Can Make You a Man and Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch-a Touch Me.
