There are two types of people: Those who are always late, and those who waste hours of their lives sat alone in cafes looking at their watches.

These can generally be split into two types of people, Type A and Type B. People who are Type A tend to be wound much tighter but are always on time, whereas Type Bs have a much more easygoing attitude, but seem to find it physically impossible to be on time for anything.

Whilst it's partly true that this is because Type Bs will have a more relaxed attitude to what "on time" means, this is not the only reason for the phenomenon. In fact, Type A people are much more likely to be multi-taskers, and multi-taskers have been found to be more likely to lose track of time - so what else is going on?

Well, some studies have shown that Type A and Type B people actually have a slightly different perception of time. When asked to judge the length of a minute without looking at a clock, a Type A will, on average, estimate that a minute passed in 58 seconds, compared with 77 seconds for Type B individuals. This doesn't sound like much, but it adds up.

It could also have something to do with the fact that Type Bs are more likely to be optimists. They will tend to underestimate how long it will take to get somewhere and how much time it will take for them to get ready. This could be behind the (admittedly infuriating) habit of some people to thinking that everything is "about half an hour away", regardless of actual distance.

At least "Late People" know they're always late, whereas "Early People" just think that they're "Right". And hey, who's to say that being ten minutes early is any better than being ten minutes late, you're still both wrong.
