2. Carolina Parakeet (Extinct 1918)

The Carolina parakeet (Conuropsis carolinensis) - or Carolina conure - was a small, green Neotropical parrot that inhabited large parts of the USA, from New York down to the Gulf of Mexico, and as far west as eastern Colorado.

Called "head of yellow" due to the fact it had a reddish-orange face, a yellow head and a pale beak, their population dwindled during the 18th and 19th Centuries, largely as a result of deforestation across the USA.

Interestingly, their brightly-coloured feathers were also used in the hats of bourgeois women - so the Carolina parakeet was hunted to extinction for this reason. The last sighting of one was 1918, and the species was declared extinct during the 1930s.
