As much as this may look like the head of a zebra has been photoshopped on to the front of a horse, this was in fact the quagga (Equus quagga quagga) - a subspecies of the plains zebra.

Found in South Africa, this zebra got its name from the call it makes - which sounds like "kwa-ha-ha". It was also a unique species due to the fact only its head and neck was striped brown and white like a zebra, before the stripes faded and the rest of its body became largely brown.

Following Dutch colonial arrival n South Africa, the quagga became heavily hunted by both the settlers and later by the Afrikaners for its meat, as well as its skin. Despite a late breeding programme introduced to try and save the quagga, the fact that domestic livestock also competed for the same food as this beast meant that it became extinct by 1883.
