Alcohol is a depressant, but for some the effects are pretty quick. To start off with, the crier seems like a regular, happy-go-lucky person, but the more they consume, the more they turn into a teary shambles. Often confessing that they're "not as happy as everyone thinks", the whole thing can be a bit embarrassing for whoever's on the receiving end of this emotional barrage. Being sympathetic to someone isn't easy when dressed in a paper hat and wearing a stick-on santa beard. Likely to say: "I don't even know why I'm crying *sob*"
