What's blind, has tentacles for a face and has crawled right out of the mouth of Hades?

No, it's not Bill Nighy's fine portrayal Davey Jones in the less-than-inspiring Pirates of the Caribbean 2, it is, in fact, the Star Nosed Mole.

This semi-aquatic mammal inhabits the wetlands of North America and spends almost all of its time in total darkness. Not only is this a handy way of preventing them seeing their own wiggly, tendrilled noses, but it also means that, over the years, its eyes are practically nonexistent.

Instead, the mole finds its food using the circle of 22 mobile, fleshy tentacles located at the end of its snout. These are known as "rays", but we've never seen anything less like the warming, golden rays of the sun in our lives.

Not only does it use these finger-like protrusions to feel up its potential prey (consisting mainly of worms and slugs), but each tendril also has highly-sensitive smell receptors. These are so sensitive, in fact, that they can even sniff out their prey underwater.

Pretty impressive and all, but let's just hope it stays underground.
