Crime: Domestic violence The married couple were going through a rough patch back in 1988 when Madonna was accused of having an affair with Warren Beatty. During this time, Penn was a drunk who became violent and aggressive with ease. He waited until his wife was alone in the house, he tied her to a chair where he physically and emotionally beat her for nine hours. To give himself a break in between beating up his wife, he would go out to buy more alcohol. She escaped when she told him that she needed to go to the toilet and he let her. However this is all speculation as he was not found guilty of these crimes, but he did own up to misdemeanour and the couple divorced shortly after. Penn was also arrested for assault in 2010 when he attacked a member of the paparazzi and broke his camera. Believe what you will about Penn as he's currently a devoted activist who is doing more right than wrong these days.
