13 Problems Only People From Jarrow Will Understand
2. Going To The Bottom Field For Bonfire Night
The closest thing Jarrow has to a yearly ritual is the traditional November 5th gathering on the Bottom Field. You might expect a town fireworks display to be a humble affair; a jolly Guy Fawkes effigy made by the local kids, the smell of sausages wafting from a communal barbecue, families huddled in blankets a safe distance from the pyrotechnics. You'd be utterly wrong. Going to the Bottom Field as a child turned me off fireworks for life. Safety measures weren't exactly at a premium, and the extent of adult supervision seemed to be: "Look at those drunk teenagers throwing lit fireworks around. We should probably say something." Nobody did.
