13 Things You Didn't Know About Stephen King

11. He Can't Remember Writing Cujo

Stephen King Carrie
Warner Bros.

Known for his reckless, drug- and booze-soaked early writing life, Stephen King took his addictions to new heights in the 1980s.

While writing Cujo, King locked himself in his study, drinking beer and snorting cocaine ad infinitum. His substance abuse was so bad that he has since claimed he can barely, if at all, recall writing Cujo, which is a crying shame, given the novel and subsequent film's commercial success.

Following the novel's publication, King's family staged an intervention, clearing out the beer cans, cigarette ends, grams of cocaine and prescription drugs from his study and confronting him with the evidence of what was a deeply damaging life. As a direct result, King has been sober and teetotal since the late '80s.
