14 Reasons Why Dumfries Is Scotland's Best Hole

6. It's A Very Proud Town

Doonhammers are very proud of their heritage and rightly so. Not only is it a beautiful little town, but they have a football team to be proud of, fiercely loyal friends, and dedicated protectors of the place. These protectors take the form of the teenage boys who always rev their engines every evening at Whitesands to defend the honour of Dumfries as it's a form of intimidation and it's also a handy way to mark their territory to outsiders. If anything, it creates a real sense of community. Whatever challenges need to be faced, the locals will do it together, and more often than not, it's telling each other that the river is about to flood and that people need to move their cars away from Whitesands.
