The actual quote: He never said it! There's not a single incidence in Arthur Conan Doyle's original Sherlock Holmes stories of the famous detective uttering what is widely believed to be his catchphrase. Sure, he's used the word "elementary" and often refers to his beloved companion as "dear Watson", but never the twain shall meet. The earliest example of "elementary, my dear Watson" is in PG Wodehouse's 1915 comic novel Psmith, Journalist.

The actual quote: "Beam us up, Mr Scott" / "No life as we know it" / "I'm not a scientist or a physicist, Mr. Spock..." "Beam me up, Scotty." "It's life, Jim, but not as we know it." "Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor, not a scientist!" Pretty much all the iconic lines you think you know from the original Star Trek series were never actually said. Nobody has ever said the exact line "Beam me up, Scotty" in any Star Trek episode or film, Spock has commented on a lack of life in a planet, and Dr McCoy has never specifically said "Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor not an !", although he's come close. Of course, in the reboots he says it all the time. That JJ Abrams, mucking things up...
