15 WTF Corporate Tweets That Definitely Got Someone Fired
10. AT&T Uses 9/11 Anniversary To Advertise Phones
It's practically a tradition at this point that on every anniversary of 9/11, corporations get involved in tributes with varying degrees of success. It would probably be wise for these brands to just completely stay out of it and let people mourn, but there are sensitive ways to get involved and pay respect. This is not one of them.
On the 12 year anniversary of the September 11th attacks, AT&T posted this image depicting a phone capturing two beams of light coming from where the Twin Towers used to be. It wouldn't be so bad if it was just the picture of the New York City skyline, but the final product sticks an AT&T product in your face in the most unsubtle way possible.
Twitter users found it to be shockingly tasteless, and the tweet quickly went viral before AT&T deleted it. They responded with, "We apologize to anyone who felt our post was in poor taste." No, "We're sorry if you were offended" is not a real apology. How about, "We're sorry because what we said was offensive"? The outrage continued as many found the non-apology to be even more insulting than the original tweet, but AT&T never did apologize for their apology.
