15 WTF Corporate Tweets That Definitely Got Someone Fired
7. Gap Uses Hurricane Sandy To Advertise Website
When a deadly storm has just hit the East Coast, destroying homes, killing nearly 300 people and causing $75 billion in damage, that is not the best time to push products. Nobody told Gap that, as the retail chain sent out this tweet in the the middle of Hurricane Sandy that's specifically addressed at those affected by it: "All impacted by Sandy, stay safe! We'll be doing lots of Gap.com shopping today. How about you?"
That's not the best phrasing considering responses from folks on the East Coast might vary from "I'm looking for a place to live because my house was just destroyed" to "I'm planning a funeral for my father who was killed in the hurricane." But surely those people can make some time to shop for khakis at the Gap.
They didn't even really apologize, following up the tweet by saying they were simply reminding people to stay indoors and keep safe. In that case, why not just post "Stay indoors and keep safe" rather than using a disaster to boost website sales? Not to mention, at the time the average Gap customer on the East Coast was probably shivering in the dark without power and not able to access the Internet.
