Not only has Quasimodo been orphaned, locked in a Cathedral for his entire life because of his deformities and his only friends are gargoyles, but he's so unlucky in love. Whilst Frollo and his men are inevitably some of the worst human beings to ever have existed, Quasimodo is saved by Esmerelda and her kindness. Clearly, there was never going to be a romantic relationship between the two, so why did his gargoyle friends push for him to tell her his feelings? Once he's friendzoned, he helps Esmeralda get with Phoebus, despite being madly in love with her himself and he gives them his blessing. He is later accepted into society but has to spend his entire life in love with someone who doesn't love him and it makes it so much worse that he has a heart of gold despite the treatment that he has suffered his whole life. Happy ending? Not quite.
