Unsatisfied with her life under water, Ariel is no different from any other teenager to ever have lived. Thinks she knows everything, and operating under the assumption that her father is simply punishing her because he's bored with his own life. Or is a sadist. Age old story. The only thing that makes sense to Ariel, is Eric, a man who she has just met and is believed to be The One. But there's only one problem: her tail. Because if she presented herself as a mermaid to Eric, he would rebuke her as most men don't want a fishy wife. So how do you get your true love then? You trick him. And change yourself completely in the process. Not only does she change herself physically, she emigrates to another world full of completely foreign concepts to her. But because she's so attractive, she can get away with brushing her hair with a fork at the dinner table. If any other girl - who had appeared from nowhere and can't speak one word - had done that at the table of an aristocrat, you can be certain that she wouldn't be invited for dessert, let alone to have the Prince's hand in marriage. Ariel has to abandon everything that she knows and has grown up with, in order to be with Eric. She has to physically change herself so that she is acceptable to him and has to leave behind her friends, family and world in order to live a life with him on land. The sea is pretty big, so surely there was a merman out there for her somewhere?
