Around the world, most people have given Australia a reputation for being the home of some of the most dangerous and venomous creatures on the entire planet. However, most of these animals aren’t likely to cross paths with humans out of shyness or fear, and as long as one doesn’t stumble into thick grass without shoes, they’re not likely to get bitten.

However, there’s one creature that’s universally hated, even among Australians: the Funnel Web Spider. Unlike most spider species, it’s the males that are bigger than the females, and when mating season comes around, these males become hyper-aggressive, wandering about in search of a mate. This is when they’re most likely to cross paths with humans, and unlike their shyer brethren, these spiders stand their ground, and bite without remorse, always delivering a full envenomation.

Furthermore, most spiders hate water, so a lot of people try to kill them by drowning them. Well this spider raises eight middle fingers to that rule, because it can survive 24 hours in water. Also, its other name is the ‘toe-stabbing spider’ because when it bites, it can pierce toenails.

Though anti-venom has reduced the number of fatalities from spider bites, the prospect of an ultra-aggressive spider that bites so hard and refuses to let go must be the primary reason why sandals are so rare in Australia.
