10. Netflix
Netflix genuinely seems like something that's only been available since, oh, 2005, but it might shock you to learn that this bad boy is 15 years old - at least, they've been offering DVD rental subscriptions since all the way back in 1998 (the company itself was founded in 1997). Back during its humble original period, Netflix had less than a 1000 films in its inventory, which - compared to the endless amounts it presumably has now - seems ridiculous. As of 2013, the company is worth billions, and founder Reed Hasting has pretty much every movie nerd in the palm of his hand.
Obscure Fact: Netflix once offered $1,000,000 to anybody who could create an algorithm that would beat the algorithm they already had in place for predicting customer ratings by 10%. That's the sort of cash they have to burn, people.
9. Furbies
What were these? Like, seriously - what actually were they supposed to be? It didn't matter: everyone wanted one anyway, because in the '90s the prospect of looking after and caring for a virtual anything was super appealing for some reason. 15 years has passed since the Furbies first landed in toys stores and parents went absolutely batsh*t crazy trying to ensure their kids had one for Christmas, then. They've re-launched the brand a few times since, but there's no chance that Furbymania will ever reach the heights that it did back in '98.
Obscure Fact: 40 million Furbies were sold at the height of their popularity. Where are they now?
