6. Myth - Kids Are Conceived For Free Farm Labour

From practically the moment they are born, Amish children are employees of the parental farm. They earn their keep and they work very hard doing so.

Educational studies are of course also part of growing up but so is milking cows, collecting corn or tobacco and tending to the animals. Each member of an Amish family has to pull their weight regardless of their age.

But the young ones are actually hired to work and aren't mere free labour. Not paid directly though - the money is put aside every year until they're an adult. It is then theirs so they have a nest egg at an early age to build on and use to put a down payment on an Amish farm of their own.

Contrast that to non-Amish Americans who coast through life for free until they're twenty-one and then suddenly incur massive almost unsurmountable debt the moment they step in to the US college system.

A Welsh semi-retired television producer and actor known for low end work that astonishingly people actually watched and even garnered some awards. Originally residing in the electrically-challenged Amish areas of Pennsylvania he has written a few books (Hollywood Pants and Hollywood Horrible Hints and Terribly Fake Tips vols 1 & 2) which you can buy on amazon and all great book stores. After a brief stint in Australia he now finds himself back in the Welsh valleys of his home country noting that it hasn't changed a bit!
