15. Myth - Tattoos And Vanity Are Forbidden

For a group of people who detest self-centered gratification it's no surprise that cosmetic make-up and tattoos are totally off the menu for the Amish. Tattoos and vanity are specifically unacceptable since they're mentioned in the Bible and so a tatted-up male Amish bloke or strumpet-painted Amish lass isn't something that is prevalent in their society.

Amish are human though and humans sometimes like bending the rules just a tad. Such as when young women folk put juice squeezed from wild berries on their lips and cheeks to add a little colour to their often pale faces.

Sun tan lotion applied to their skin in interesting swirly designs is sometimes used as well and thus when working in the fields under the extreme heat of the Pennsylvanian sun they get a hefty sun burn - except in the place where they put the lotion on.

A temporary solar tattoo created by blocking the sun isn't quite the spectacle as a full-blown tattooed back piece or sleeve but it is kind of awesome in its own quaint way. Rather clever if you ask me.

A Welsh semi-retired television producer and actor known for low end work that astonishingly people actually watched and even garnered some awards. Originally residing in the electrically-challenged Amish areas of Pennsylvania he has written a few books (Hollywood Pants and Hollywood Horrible Hints and Terribly Fake Tips vols 1 & 2) which you can buy on amazon and all great book stores. After a brief stint in Australia he now finds himself back in the Welsh valleys of his home country noting that it hasn't changed a bit!
