16 Commonly Held Amish Myths Busted!
8. Myth - They Can't Use Cars
The Amish ride horse-drawn buggies and drive their horse-powered farming equipment on the roads but they do not drive cars. This much is true and is a situation not too dissimilar to the electrical issue where driving a car would require a license, insurance, inspections etc and thus would place them firmly on the grid and so is forbidden.
Riding as a car passenger is fine though and the Amish actually hire local folk to take them places too far to travel by conventional Amish transport. There are several civilian people near every Southern Pennsylvanian town who supplement their income by acting as a minicab service solely aimed at driving the Amish around.
But before anyone quits their day job to start Amish Uber Cab Service it's important to remember that these fine hard-working folk are indeed real farmers and are often covered in sweat, dirt and the previously mentioned horse droppings when they get in the car - bring some tarp.
