4. Poe Attempted To Commit Suicide By Ingesting Opium In 1848

Just a year after his wife Virginia's death, when alcoholism had started to set in, Poe attempted to take his own life. Poe self-ingested opium in order to try and commit suicide in 1848 - although he failed and lived for another year.
