When Edgar Allan Poe was 27, he married 13-year-old Virginia Clemm in a private ceremony at a house in Richmond, Baltimore, on May 16, 1836. This despite the fact he had been engaged to childhood sweetheart Sarah Elmira Royster for two years earlier in his life. Interestingly though, Presbyterian minister Reverend Amasa Converse agreed to take the ceremony after a man named Thomas W Cleland signed an affidavit alleging that Virginia was actually 21. Their honeymoon was hardly to a far-flung exotic place, however, as they instead went on a short trip to Petersburg, Virginia - presumably because that's what the bride's first name was...
