15. Virginia Also Happened To Be His Cousin... But He Called Her His "Sis"
As if it wasn't weird enough that Poe married a 13-year-old - it turns out she was actually his cousin! Both the grandchildren of David Poe and Elizabeth Cairnes, Edgar Allan Poe and Virginia Clemm were related - although to be fair, it wasn't too unusual for cousins to marry one another in 19th Century America. What was bizarre though is that Poe referred to Virginia as being "like a sister", and gave her the nickname "Sissy" or "Sis"... Rumours have persisted that although they were married, Poe and Virginia never actually consummated the marriage, although this has never been proven. Let's hope it's true if he did call her "Sissy" though...
