9. Every Penny Of His Nobel Peace Prize Winnings Was Donated To The Civil Rights Movement (The Equivalent Of £280,000 Today)
Alongside his Nobel Peace Prize, King also received $54,123 - the equivalent of about $410,000 (£280,000) in today's money. King kept none of the rewards for himself, however, instead investing it all into the Civil Rights Movement in the USA. During his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech in 1964, King declared:
I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right temporarily defeated is stronger than evil triumphant.
