18 Mind-Blowing Facts About Martin Luther King Jr

13. King Appears To Have Attempted To Commit Suicide At The Age Of 12 Following The Death Of His Grandmother

As a child growing up in Atlanta, Georgia, King Jr suffered from depression - a condition he would continue to battle for the remainder of his life. This depression was further exacerbated by the anger and resentment he felt against whites - due to the "racial humiliation" he believed was brought against his family and friends in the segregated South of the USA. Partially as a result of his depression, and partially due to the fact he blamed himself for his grandmother's heart attack and subsequent death in May 1941, King returned from a parade he had been forbidden to go to and learned of his grandmother's passing. He then ran to the upstairs of the family home and jumped from the window of the house in an apparent suicide bid. He did not die, but he did suffer injuries, and he was nursed back to health by his grieving family.
