18 Problems Only Artists Will Understand

6. When Something Starts Off Really Well And Ends Up Horrible

All artists know the struggle of being super enthusiastic about a piece, working tirelessly and eagerly, only to step back and look at the finished product and find themselves in absolute shock because, somewhere along the way, something went horribly wrong. It could be anything: the lines that once seemed perfectly straight might now be more crooked than a plate of spaghetti, or your shading might suddenly look more like a blob of grey than a perfectly executed shadow. You might not even be able to pinpoint the mistake; you just know that what lies before you is nothing short of disastrous. Kill it. Kill it with fire.

5. The Envy Of Meeting Someone Who's Better Than You

jealous jealousy community alison brieSony Pictures TelevisionThere are a lot of talented people out there and, while you are certainly one of them, it's almost inevitable that you'll someday meet someone who can do what, for you, is impossible. Maybe they can draw incredibly photo-realistically, maybe their sculpture skills are out of this world, or maybe their colour blending can reduce one to tears. No matter their ability, it takes no time at all for the green-eyed monster of jealousy to overtake you. What gives them the right to be so bloody talented? Why can't you do the things they can? Is there some magical process that can transfer abilities from their brain to yours? If so, how much does it cost? It's not easy being green (with envy).

4. Should You Finish Or Should You Sleep?

boo monster's inc sleepy disneyBuena Vista PicturesTo sleep or not to sleep; that is the question. When you're in the midst of a creative breakthrough, time can fly like nobody's business. If you sit down to work at 9:00 p.m., it might be 2:00 a.m. before you next look at the clock- and immediately wonder where the past five hours went. It's most definitely bed-time... but you're just so close to being done. It is now when serious decisions must be made: pack up your things now and finish in the morning, which risks losing whatever good juices are flowing at this moment, or keep going and give up a good night's sleep? It's a tough choice but, hey: when you're on a roll, you're on a roll.
