17. Being Asked 'So What Do You Do?'
Argh. Has there ever been more of a loaded question? It's not that it's necessarily a bad question - it's an ice-breaker, a way to connect with someone and show that you actually care about what their lives are about. However, when you're out of work, it basically sweeps your legs out from under. So much of our identity comes from our work and what we do for a job, that when you're out of work, it can leave you floundering. What approach do you use? Be honest and say that you're looking for work? Frame it nicer and make it sound like a great opportunity for personal growth? Lie and say you've moved jobs? Whatever your approach, it's best to avoid the too-defensive route which involves avoiding the question altogether and resolutely leaving the situation to drown your sorrows in cheap alcohol, promise never to interact with those people again, and to cloak yourself in shame.
