20. Volunteering At School Events
You never truly understood just how much of a safe haven school was. Yes, it had its drawbacks (learning, swirlies and the creepy caretaker who lives in the school basement), but it was a much needed escape from home, a chance for you and your friends to just let loose and unwind. Then just like Vernon Dursley and that dreaded Sunday; a letter arrived, alerting your parents to the fact that a school event (rather than an invitation to Hogwarts) was taking place and they were in need of chaperones. Thinking they were doing you a massive favour, they were all too keen to sign up. Sometimes it was just a school fair or some charity night which was okay, but other times it was the school disco a true horror no son or daughter should have to live through. Whats worse than them accompanying you to the school disco? Probably that moment you hid away in the dark corner of the streamer-ridden assembly hall because your Mum and Dad were getting their groove on and are beckoning you to join them on the dance floor. Thats enough grounds to grant you emancipation.
