When France surrendered to the Nazis in June 1940, the British government wanted to show their resolve by convincing the public they could defeat Germany without the French - just as they (partially) did during World War I.

A series of posters similar to this one, showing Brits in combat with Germans, were produced with the iconic slogan to encourage the population to continue to fight.
